I have a JD320 Lawn and Garden tractor with the 18 HP liquid-cooled V-Twin engine. I purchased the tractor new in 1993 and it has been trouble-free except for one annoying problem. When the tractor is running, the Battery Light will come on and remain on most of the time. At times it will shut off but usually it is on. Since this has been going on for about two years and the battery is still in good shape I assume the battery is getting charged normally. Indeed, everything appears to be normal except for the Battery Light coming on. Any suggestions?

While the light is on, check the DC voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running. It should be between approximately 13.4 and 14.2 volts If so the light or the light sending unit (if the 320 has one) is defective. If the voltage is between 11.5 and 12.2 the generator/alternaror is not working or you could have an intermittant short some where between the charging source and the battery. A tractor the size of the 320 has a lot of viberation and this is a possibillity. If the voltage is between 12.2 and 13.0 you could have a bad connection or a charging sourse that is defective.Best quess, you have a defection light/sending unit, because you led me to believe you never have had to charge the battery wit an external source. Hope this helps. ....
